In Preparation for Met Gala 2024 | What We Expect to See
The most anticipated and the most extravagant red carpet affair, the Met Gala 2024, is approaching and we can hardly wait to see who will steal the spotlight this year! Will it be Rihanna again with one of her dramatic ensembles, or perhaps Lady Gaga ready to create magic with another of her iconic looks? Will Beyonce flaunt a bold new statement piece or maybe Kim Kardashian will dazzle with her jaw-dropping style? Whatever the lineup, we are all geared up for a night of sheer magic!
The Met Gala is the most significant entry on the fashion calendar annually and is the breeding ground for the latest fashion trends and styles. We witness the most dramatic looks and transformations and are left in awe for weeks afterwards.
The Met Gala 2024 is accompanied by the Costume Institute’s exhibition, which will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and this year the theme is “Sleeping Beauties; Reawakeing Fashion”. And it is this theme that has us excited the most. And with reason.
Let us see what we can expect to see at the gala this year.
Date and Venue
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host the extravaganza on Monday, the 6th of May, 2024 in New York. It will be a celebration of the dazzling exhibition and its theme. The red carpet will be hosting fashion’s finest, who are sure to dazzle the crowds with their creative, and sometimes even eccentric, jaw-dropping styles.
Dress Code Theme
The official theme for the dress code is “The Garden Of Time”. It will be exciting to see how this theme is interpreted by the attendees, literally and figuratively, and we are all eager to witness their grand and creative ensembles.
Hosts line-up
Just like every year, a list of celebrities has been lined up to host the event. They include Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth who will be the official co-chairs. There will also be two honorary chairs namely, Jonathan Anderson, who is the creative director for Loewe and the CEO of Tiktok, Shou Chew. Doesn’t that sound impressive?
Guest list
This list keeps us guessing till the eve of the event itself when it is finally made public. But we are sure that all of fashion’s A-listers are bound to make an appearance like they do every year. Like always there are also bound to be many influential attendees like politicians and the smart set from the tech world.
The list comprises around 450 names including members from the fashion world and those in the creative arts.
We hear that newcomers to the event include Lily Gladstone and the Irish actor from Saltburn, Barry Keoghan. Kendall Jenner, Olivia Rodrigo, Uma Thurman, Sarah Paulson, and Cara Delevingne are also expected to be there. We can’t wait to see who else!
The Gala Itself
This dinner is in fact a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum and a charity event. Since phones are not allowed within the venue, we will not be able to take a peek through any social media. We do know there will be some grand performances from celebrities such as Justin Bieber and the guests will be able to view the exhibition. They will then sit down to a banquet which is sure to be a lavish affair, with a meticulous menu crafted by renowned chefs.
The dinner is expected to feature gourmet dishes that celebrate the theme of the event.
Amidst the elegance and dazzle, the guests will have the opportunity to connect with fellow patrons of the arts and discuss the showcased works.
This exquisite gathering promises a night to remember, filled with art, culture, and philanthropy.
Sustainability At The Met Gala 2024
The Met Gala is now increasingly acknowledging the importance of sustainable fashion in its celebrations. This is all the more appropriate as the industry as a whole is also making a shift towards a more sustainable approach.
Just like last year, sustainability is expected to play a prominent role.
This year again, celebrities may decide to re-wear or repurpose garments from previous events or collections. A notable example from the 2023 Met Gala was Dua Lipa who wore a 1992 Chanel bridal dress that was originally worn by Claudia Schiffer. Another case in point was Margot Robbie who transformed a Chanel dress worn by Cindie Crawford in 1993. Naomi Campbell also played her part by restyling a Chanel Haute Couture spring/summer 2010 gown.
Many attendees may choose to wear outfits that can be labelled as sustainable fashion and are made from upcycled materials.
Designers may opt for garments created using eco-friendly production methods, such as reducing waste and reusing materials that would otherwise be considered waste. For the Met Gala 2023, some brands such as Coachtopia made outfit embellishments from discarded cans, bottles, etc contributing to the entire industry’s move towards sustainable clothing.
Designer Stella McCartney’s commitment to sustainability was evident in her designs last year that were worn by Aubrey Plaza and Madelyn Cline.
Clearly, there is a lot to look forward to this year as well. There are sure to be initiatives that will further create an awareness of environmental concerns and a need for sustainable clothing in the fashion world.
We hope to see the presence of eco-friendly innovative brands such as CELYSTM fully compostable fibre at the Met Gala in the coming years!
The Exhibition
Curated by Andrew Boulton, the exhibition is about bringing some dresses from their permanent collection back to life; hence the theme, ‘Sleeping Beauties; Reawakening Fashion”. A total of 250 dresses are expected to be on display, some as much as a century and a half old!
Take for example the Charles Fredrick Worth’s ball gown from 1877. Since such pieces are too fragile and delicate, they will be showcased through video animation and computer graphics.
Other pieces include designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and many more. As a matter of fact, 400 years of fashion history will be on display. Won't that be such a treat?
Andrew Bolton has stated that the exhibition will be shaped around three main “zones”—Land, Sea, and Sky. This will be a way of paying homage to the natural world.
“It is very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” he said.
Will it be broadcast anywhere?
Now here comes the burning question, how will we get to see it?
Luckily for audiences worldwide, the event is expected to be live-streamed on Vogue and all their socials, namely Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The details have yet to be shared by the team.
