Met Gala 2024: The Rise of Sustainability in High Fashion
As with every year, the fashion world awaits the famous annual gala, hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, to take place in all its glamour and extravagance.
The 2024 edition, themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” is set to be held on the 10th of May in the Museum of Art in New York. Designs introduced and worn by celebrities at the gala have become hot topics for discussion around the world. We all remember how Kim Kardashian’s head-to-toe black ensemble in 2021 made headlines or when she put on Marilyn Monroe’s infamous dress from 1962 in 2022, and it caused chatter in the fashion world for months after the event itself.
Politicians have also made memorable appearances at the Gala and caused a stir. One such iconic occasion was when AOC appeared with her “Tax The Rich” dress back in 2021, adding a political angle to the glamorous world.
Significance of The Met Gala in The Fashion World
Yet beyond all the glitz and glitter, an impactful and highly anticipated fashion spectacle like the Met Gala provides an ideal platform for sustainable brands to raise awareness and launch new ideas and designs.
The exclusive list of influential attendees including A-list celebrities from different parts of the world, world champions in different sports like Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams, and many others, allows extensive networking opportunities.
The exposure does not just end there. Extensive coverage by global media makes the event accessible to an international audience. Exposure on such a grand scale will allow brands like to spread their ideas all over the fashion world.
The presence of any brand at the Met Gala is a stamp of approval by the fashion world as its image of sophistication gets reinforced.
Maybe one day we’ll see CELYS™ Fibres on the red carpet?!
The Met Gala 2024
The 2024 edition of the event is set for May 10 to September 2, 2024.
Exhibition Location: The Met Fifth Avenue, The Tisch Galleries, Gallery 899, Floor 2
The exhibition promises to be an exciting event this year where tradition will merge with innovation and cutting edge technology. A wide range of tools will be put to use, and this will be an exciting display for visitors.
Upon stepping into the halls, visitors will be treated to different themes that are set to take inspiration from the natural world. The exhibition halls will take the shape of galleries. With walls embossed with Elizabethan embroidery, animated floors, and Hitchcock’s blackbirds projected onto ceilings, the event promises to be a treat for visitors.
There will be many collaborations to look forward to, such as between expert photographer Nick Knight, SHOWstudio, and Andrew Bolton. Leon Leong will design the event in collaboration with the Met’s Design Department.
Sleeping Beauties, in its title theme, refers to antique articles owned by the Museum’s Costume Institute that are too delicate and valuable to be worn by mannequins. 250 of these articles will be on display at this year’s Gala.
The 2024 edition of this event will be sponsored by TikTok and is bound to attract clicks and views, unlike any of the previous editions. It is crucial to realise the importance of conveying a sustainability message, especially since the main target audience is the newer generations. This message is even more impactful in the digital era, where platforms like TikTok shape trends and influence viewpoints.
CELYS’ alignment with The Met Gala 2024 theme
The Met Gala will see an intersection of opulence with a recognition of the environmental emergency we are living through. With the event centred on three main zones (Land, Sea, and Sky), its theme highlighting the importance of the natural world perfectly aligns with CELYS’ vision for a shift toward sustainable fashion. We can only hope that in years to come you’ll be seeing sustainable designs featuring CELYS™ at the MET gala too!
For those who aren’t aware CELYS™ is our revolutionary fibre made from compostable polyester, it’s an innovation bound to catch the eyes of leading designers and artists from across the globe as the fashion industry moves into greener solutions.
CELYS™, A Game-Changer in Sustainable Fashion
According to McKinsey and Company, people purchased 60% more garments in 2014 than in 2000 but have only kept those clothes for half as long. To make matters worse, a UNEP report in 2019 states that 60% of all raw material used by the industry is essentially plastic. The fashion industry has been responsible for 10% of the global carbon pollution, which needs to stop.
A considerable percentage of clothes today are made from synthetic materials, such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Of these, PET or polyethene terephthalate is a favourite of designers because of its superior qualities. During every wash, these synthetic materials shed tiny microplastics into the water, which get carried away into water bodies. Needless to say, this is causing serious environmental issues.
CELYS™ is one brand that has appeared on the scene as a game changer, and it is setting new standards for sustainability to manage its impact on the environment. This compostable polyester has properties that outperform those of PET and so can be used to replace it.
What Makes CELYS Stand Out?
- Fashion has been synonymous with excess. Now that CELYS has stepped into this world, this presumption is sure to end. It has integrated sustainability into style by stepping into exclusive events like PV Paris and the brand’s launch event during London Fashion Week. CELYS has made its point that being eco-conscious does not mean compromising on style and elegance.
- CELYS’ new eco-friendly fibre is compostable by industry standards. It is hydrophilic in nature, so any fabric created with it will have moisture-wicking properties. The innovation of compostable polyester fibres by CELYS catches the attention of anyone hearing about it for the first time. Plastic raw material in the form of synthetic fibre being replaced by material that is 95.4% compostable in 179 days is exactly the change and shift this industry needs.
- CELYS™ compostable fibre is luxurious enough to be used in haute couture without any compromise on sophistication or craftsmanship.
- The most significant contribution CELYS is striving for is creating awareness among young consumers of the need to be environmentally conscious. It has extended an invitation to the fashion industry to adopt practices that are sustainable for the future.
Once such measures are taken and such fabrics are embraced, the fashion industry will be viewed not as an enemy to the environment but as one that nurtures the planet. It is CELYS’ way of showing that fashion can be both glamorous and responsible.
Wrapping Up
The fashion world is abuzz with excitement in the build-up to this year’s Met Gala. The grand showcase promises to have style, creativity, and glamour all on display for the world to enjoy. Designers, celebrities, and fashion enthusiasts prepare for this iconic red carpet, and the excitement is almost palpable.
With sustainable brands like CELYS™ fibres planning to make their name within global fashion markets and enter into this glamorous world in the future, the industry seems to be ready to welcome eco-conscious trends.
Events such as the Met Gala are unique platforms for designers, brands, and influencers to showcase their creativity, make bold statements, and leave an indelible mark on the global fashion landscape. The presence of sustainable brands and materials will help steer fashion in a new direction. It will reawaken the fashion world to the possibilities of a sustainable, elegant, and responsible future.
CELYS has made us realise that the power to bring about change rests with us and we can only hope to see inspiring brands like this flooding the red carpet of Met Gala.
